Meeting healthcare needs and offering training programmes

GPCareforAll established its first GP practice in Summerhill, Dublin 1, in 2015. Originally based in Summerhill Health Centre the practice is now based in the new Summerhill Primary Care Centre. At Summerhill Family Practice we offer high quality healthcare with longer consultations if necessary. The practice is now thriving with over 2400 patients and is central to the community in Dublin 1.

The practice is a training practice for undergraduate medical students and trainees from the North Dublin City GP scheme.

The Team

Brid Shanahan

Doctor

Dr Shanahan completed medicine in University College Dublin in 2010. She completed her General Practice training in 2015 in the North Dublin City GP Training Scheme. She is a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners. Dr Shanahan joined Summerhill Family Practice in 2016.

Daragh Byrne

Doctor

Dr Byrne completed medicine in UCD in 2003. He completed his General Practice training in 2012 and joined the practice, relocating from Cork, in 2021.

Walter Cullen

Professor

Professor Cullen completed medicine in UCD in 1994.  He is now a Professor of Urban General Practice at UCD School of Medicine and joined the practice in 2019. He currently works one day per week in Summerhill Family Practice.

Philippa Byrne

Doctor

Dr Byrne completed medicine in RCSI in 2017. She completed her General Practice training in 2022 in the North Dublin City GP Training Scheme. Dr Byrne initially trained in Summerhill Family Practice and officially joined the Practice in 2022.

Bridget Kiely

Doctor

Dr Kiely graduated from medicine in TCD in 2005 and completed her General Practice training in London in 2014. Prior to that she trained in general medicine and obtained qualification in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She previously worked in Safetynet Primary Care, before joining the team at Summerhill part time.  She is also completing a PhD on Social Prescribing in Primary Care.

David Walsh

Doctor

Dr Walsh completed medicine in RCSI in 2015. He completed his General Practice training in 2022 in the North Dublin City GP Training Scheme. Dr Walsh initially trained in Summerhill Family Practice and officially joined the Practice in 2022.

Gemma Curran

Nurse

Gemma has been an integral part of our healthcare team since 2016, providing outstanding care to our patients. Currently on maternity leave with an expected return date in early 2024.

Marie Byrne

Nurse

Nurse Marie joined us in 2020 as a practice nurse from The Community Intervention Team where she worked as a specialist nurse. Marie completed her training in Kings College, London and worked in hospital and community settings for the last 30 years.

Brian Coffey

Nurse

Brian competed his nurse training in 2003 in DCU and joined the practice in early 2023, having worked in Beaumont hospital for 17 years.

Lynda Kearney

Phlebotomist

Lynda joined the practice in 2021 and since then has expanded her career from a medical administrator to a skilled phlebotomist. With a strong foundation in medical administration, she pursued further education and training to acquire the necessary skills for specimen collection and handling.

Laura Prodan

Interpreter

Laura joined the practice in 2016 as an interpreter. She also works the Safetynet Capuchin Clinic. Laura specialises in helping the Roma and Romanian community.

Amanda Farrelly

Manager

Amanda has over 20 years’ experience in the field of medical operations. She joined the practice in 2022 and holds management qualifications from Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), the National College of Ireland (NCI), and University College Cork (UCC).

Helen Parsons

Supervisor

Helen joined the practice in 2020, leveraging her expertise in patient requirements and administrative duties. With her exceptional empathy, Helen connects with patients and provides them with the support they need.  She ensures a seamless and compassionate experience for everyone at the practice.

Pauline Nolan

Administrator

Pauline joined the practice in 2023, with a background in medical facilities management, she has become a dedicated member of the team. She is always readily available to provide help and assistance to patients and visitors.

Catherine O’Carroll

Administrator

Catherine joined the practice in 2022 on a voluntary basis having previously worked as a post-primary inspector at Department of Education and Skills. Catherine is a valued member of our dedicated front-of-house team, always ready and available to assist patients and visitors with their needs.

Training future medical professionals for excellence

Summerhill Family Practice is a training practice for a variety of medical trainees. Currently these trainees come from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin. These students are in the final stages of their undergraduate medical training. If a student is with your GP they will inform you before you enter the room. You may decline to have a student present if you wish.

The practice is also a training practice for specialist trainees in general practice from the North Dublin City GP training scheme. These trainees are qualified experienced doctors and are undertaking further experience and training in general practice. They remain with the practice for one year.

Complaints

We welcome suggestions for improvements to our services. We strive to provide the best possible care to all our patients and we always welcome your views or suggestions to help us improve our service to you. If you have any suggestions for us on how our service could be improved please speak with one of the reception staff who will be more than happy to make a note and pass it on to the relevant staff.

Complaints procedure:

  • Complaints can be addressed to our administrative staff, Practice Manager, or to the Health Professional that you see.
  • Every complaint we receive will be acknowledged in writing and it will be explained to you when you can expect a further response once an initial investigation has taken place.
  • We will try our best to fully understand every point of view and will notify you of the outcome.
  • Where necessary the practice will consider any internal action required to ensure a similar incident does not occur in the future.
  • A full copy of our complaint’s procedure is available from our reception staff.
